Colourful flower runner revisited

Phew, am I glad the week's almost over! You know sometimes you get those moments when everything seems to all happen at once. Appointments to keep, entertaining unexpected visitors, trying to get the car through it's MOT without any added expense. Oh yes, that just about sums up the kind of week I've had.



But now I can take a deep breath and relax into the weekend. I've enjoyed watching some of the World Indoor Athletics Champs on TV this morning, glad to see some Team GB success in the heats. Fingers crossed for the finals. 



As you were all so generous with your comments about my ripple, I thought I'd follow that up with a look back at my colourful flower runner project. I made a very tentative start on this back in the summer of 2011, after being totally inspired by this gorgeous pattern. 



I was just beginning to find my feet with crochet, and at about 8 months in felt ready to take on a bigger project. I followed Solveig's pattern for the circle part of each block, but then adapted it as I wasn't confident using the JAYG (join as you go) method. I crocheted each square, then slip stitched them together in rows. 


Soon I had accumulated row upon row of colourful circles framed in white. It was a pleasure to make and I got a real thrill out of seeing the project grow. I decided on a runner, rather than a blanket as I wanted to give my rattan chair a makeover. I ended up with 7 rows of 22 blocks. The perfect width and length for my chair cover.


It took me a couple of months to complete, but for a self confessed slow coach that was pretty quick. I'd like to attempt something like this again but on a grander scale. Problem is, I'm not sure I have the patience for it.

    Hi Sharron, I've always admired this chair runner and it's lovely to get a closer look on this post. It looks beautiful in your colourful Catania cotton and your work is always so neat. I would love to have a go at making a bedspread like this, but with my king size bed I don't know if I have the stamina! I love Solveig's "flowers in snow" name for hers. Have a lovely weekend.

    I've made a vow to myself to crochet something like this some day, as I love colourful granny squares... I still haven't found the courage to begin, but it might be an idea for summer days... : ) Have a nice weekend! Xx

    Such a beautiful runner and it does look lovely on that chair. I love the 'Flowers in the Snow' pattern and it looks particularly fresh and flowery in those Catania cottons!

    Sharon, I love your blog and your bright, happy crochet project colors! The yarn you have pictured in the first image is a brand I've seen in Germany (I'm an American who lives in Dusseldorf most of the year). Do you find it to be a good brand?       Hi Mary,

      I've been using the Catania for some time now. Funnily enough I order mine from a German supplier http://www.handarbeitswaren.de/Schachenmayr-Wolle/Catania-Schachenmayr.html. I was initially attracted to the gorgeous array of colours, but it works up really beautifully aswell, hence why I've used it in numerous projects. I am not sponsored by or affiliated with any brands, so this is my honest opinion. Although with the amount of free publicity I've given them perhaps a few free balls wouldn't go amiss ;) I'm saving up my pennies at the moment to buy some more, and because I consider it to be very affordable it shouldn't be long before I have my hands on a new stash. Thanks for your kind thoughts!

    Magnificent! It fits perfectly, it is hard to go from one blanket to another. I would go for a few little early Christmas present makes to hide away before you start a new blanket maybe. Jo x
